The Cardiology Service of the Oklahoma State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides state-of-the-art referral and consultation services for veterinarians and clients pursuing diagnostics and treatment for veterinary patients with cardiac disease. The Cardiology service provides services for patients of variety of species, including canine, feline, equine, bovine, and camelid.

Services Offered

Clients are offered some of the most advanced diagnostic services and therapies available. Most of our patients have diagnostic testing performed on an outpatient basis with results available the same day. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures offered include:

Echocardiography

Cardiac ultrasound is a noninvasive method of evaluating the heart. Ultrasound creates images of the heart that allow evaluation of cardiac structures and function. Doppler imaging is especially important in the evaluation of patients with congenital heart disease.

Radiography

This diagnostic test uses x-rays to produce an image of the lungs and heart.

Electrocardiography (ECG)

This test produces a tracing of the cardiac rhythm and allows evaluation of the electrical activity of the heart.

Holter monitoring

This is a device that records the cardiac rhythm over the course of an entire day. This test allows us to evaluate the severity of a cardiac arrhythmia.

Pacemakers

These devices are surgically implanted in patients to treat cardiac arrhythmias that involve abnormally low heart rates.

Cardiac catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive surgical
method to diagnose and treat various cardiac diseases, including pulmonic stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus, cardiac foreign bodies, obstruction from adult heartworms (caval syndrome).

Surgery

Surgical procedures offered for our cardiac patients include pericardiectomy, patent ductus arteriosus ligation, epicardial pacemaker placement, and thoracic duct ligation for chylothorax.
